All my fabric work is hand-stitched. I mostly use vintage fabrics or fabrics that I paint or dye — most often with plant materials, rust or tea.

This piece came together during a retreat in a beautiful, wooded landscape in eastern Washington. The path was dyed from madrone bark, while the rocks were stained with tea and iron. The trees were from an upcycled pair of men’s wool pants, and the background a stained and painted scrap of vintage silk curtains. Available.

An ode to the humble penny and thrift. Size 8.5×8.0″. Made with reused, upcycled fabrics and hand-stitched onto an old, patched linen toweling. Available.

A tribute to the many losses we accumulate as we age, from the trivial (a lost glove) to the profound (loss of people we love, physical abilities, etc.) Sized 14×10.5″ The antique photos were printed onto sheer fabric and the base of this piece is from an old feed or grain bag, framed by wool from a vintage skirt. Available.

This piece was inspired by a line in my Grandma’s journal, which became the title of this piece. Her generation and those before did in fact iron their sheets, which is hard to imagine today. The vintage iron rest that became the base for this piece had been in my stash of found objects for many years before being called upon to hold this hand-stitched fabric story, and when I found this vintage photo of a woman ironing, the piece fully came to life. SOLD

This piece represents all those bits of advice mothers have for generations passed on to their daughters. Whether we buy into the words or not, they tend to be “worn” close to our hearts, as we might wear a cotton slip, for years. Stitched into the slip in this piece are the words I can still hear my mother saying to me. Vintage child’s slip, fabrics, letter text, photos, hand-stitched onto vintage tea-dyed towel. SOLD

Hand-stitched, artist-painted/dyed fabrics. SOLD

I love stitching through wool…I find it so soothing…so, I often turn to this fabric when I want to just play with color and stitch. This is a scene from my imagination, but a familiar landscape of Washington State. Handstitched and layered wool felt. SOLD

Handstitched linen and silk fabrics. SOLD.

Painted silk and linen, hand-stitched. SOLD

Hand-stitched vintage fabrics, stained and painted. SOLD

In the dreary late winters when the sky is layered with grays, the brilliant green moss that suddenly appears enlivens my winter-weary heart. On rocks, sidewalks, trees, streets, the moss appears at exactly the right moment, when I fear that winter will last forever, giving me hope that spring is coming soon. I dyed this fabric with tea and iron rust, the background with acorns, SOLD.
